Regional Day 2017

On Saturday South Cheshire branch hosted the West Midlands Regional Day 2017. A number of Solihull members went along, not only to enjoy a sociable and fun day but also to see just how these days are put together. We will be organising the Regional Day next year so now we know the high standard we must aspire to !

The day began with the Regional AGM, with attendance being much improved from last year as a result of combining the Regional AGM with the Regional Day activities. This has to be a great result.
The day then progressed with news from Head Quarters, the presentation of 25 year badges , time to view the competition entries, shop with the traders or buy some second hand books, fabric and thread packs .

Tickets for the raffle went well with such great prizes - a sewing machine, a Lowery stand, a workshop voucher, thread and fabric packs and some Pink pig sketch books.
The entries for the competition were very varied with prizes for hand stitching, machine stitching, the Speakers' Choice and also prizes for the JETs entries (young embroiderers). The title for the competition was PATHWAYS for adult entries and CONTRASTS for the JETs entries.

After a splendid buffet lunch the guest speaker for the afternoon was Hanny Newton. She is just beginning her professional career in embroidery and textiles and is refreshingly passionate and enthusiastic about her chosen technique of goldwork. Her work is very contemporary whilst still using some traditional techniques. Hanny was able to inform us of some very exciting developments in her career, with the opportunity to work on a new project at the British Museum this October. She will be creating an interactive public art piece as part of the Museum's Scythians exhibition. For more information visit www.hannyembroidery.com

Nicky Dillerstone - September meeting

Earlier in the year Nicky came to Solihull to host a very successful workshop for our members , creating textile pods using fabric, threads and wire. This month she came to tell us more about her textile creations. She designs and makes unusual 3D pieces, pods and books using a variety of materials, often incorporating found objects. Many of her creations are left in the outdoor landscape to weather and be utilised by the local wildlife! Thank you Nicky for a most enjoyable and inspiring talk.

Some samples of Nicky's books without words- lots of textures, materials and apertures to look through.

Maria Thomas - our May Speaker
Our speaker this month was Maria Thomas, a local textile artist. She gave a very lively talk, with a colourful display of her very individual and personal work. Her work reflects the everyday associations within daily life - motherhood, shopping, domestic chores and the ups and downs of family life. She creates fabric collages, using patchwork and quilting techniques, to create visual memories of her experiences. Thank you maria for such an interesting talk and display of work.
